Professional Nursing in the Daily Routine

Abstract:

Der Begriff der »professionellen Pflege« ist inzwischen fester Bestandteil im Sprachgebrauch beruflich Pflegender. Welche Bedeutung(en) verbinden sich aber mit der Verwendung des Wortes professionell? Aus professionssoziologischer Perspektive sind mehrere Antworten möglich. Mit dem gesellschaftlich wachsenden Bedarf an Pflegeleistungen steigen die Anforderungen und Erwartungen an Qualifikationen und Kompetenzen von Pflegenden. Vor diesem Hintergrund erfährt die Art und Weise der Berufsausübung, das spezifische Handeln der Pflegenden in alltäglichen Pflegesituationen besondere Bedeutung. Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden qualitativ-empirisch durchgeführten Studie lassen aufhorchen. Es zeigt sich: professionelles Pflegehandeln im Alltag bildet die Ausnahme, die Mehrheit der Pflegenden ist bei der Berufsausübung weit von dem Anspruch professioneller Pflege entfernt. Es besteht großer Qualifizierungsbedarf. Neben der Aufdeckung von Qualifizierungsdefiziten und -hindernissen gibt der Beitrag wichtige Anregungen und Anstöße für notwendige Professionalisierungsprozesse in der Pflege.

Nowadays »professional nursing« is a term frequently used in the language of nursing staff. But what does the term »professional« mean? What really is »professional«? From a sociological perspective the question can be answered in different ways. While the social demand of professional care is rising, expectations and the need for qualifications, technical and vocational skills of nursing personnel are increasing, too. The modalities of nursing practice, the specific kind of acting in situations of nursing, get more and more important. Current research results from a qualitative study should send our antennae buzzing: In workday life professional nursing is merely an exception. In daily practice most of the employed nurses are far away from professional standards of nursing. More skills and more occupational qualifications are necessary. This article deals with shortcomings and weaknesses in the qualification process of nursing staff and offers suggestions and impulses to support and promote the process of professionalisation.
